Valley flashing repair fixes the channel where two roof slopes meet. A valley carries more water than any other part of the roof, and when a valley runs down into the side of a chimney or a wall, it can send a flood of water straight at the flashing.

There are two common ways to build a valley. An open valley has exposed metal, usually a W-profile galvanized or painted steel liner with a center rib that stops water from one slope from running up the other side. A closed or woven valley has shingles running through it over an ice and water shield underlayment. We repair both, and we match what the roof already has unless the valley keeps failing.

The failures we see most are nails driven too close to the center of the valley, cut shingles with the corners left square so water runs sideways under them, and rusted metal under a pile of leaves and pine needles. In the Southeast, pine straw sitting in a valley holds water for days.

Where a valley dumps into a chimney, we often add a chimney cricket or extend the valley metal to push water around the brick. Call (833) 583-1301 to get a valley looked at.

How a chimney leak job goes

Four steps to chimney flashing repair in Cincinnati, OH

01

Call and describe the leak

Tell us where the water shows up and when. A stain that only appears in wind-driven rain points somewhere different than water in the firebox.

02

We find the entry point

Our crew checks the crown, the brick face and the step and counter flashing, because a leak at the chimney is not always a flashing problem.

03

You get a plain written scope

We tell you what failed, what we plan to replace and what it costs before any shingle comes off.

04

We fix it with metal, not caulk

New step flashing under each shingle course and counter flashing set into a ground mortar joint. Photos before and after.

Chimney Flashing Repair FAQs

Questions about chimney flashing repair

Questions we hear about Valley Flashing Repair in Cincinnati, OH.

Call (833) 583-1301
How do I know if my chimney leak is flashing or something else?
Look at when it leaks. A stain that shows up during wind-driven rain from one direction often points to the flashing on that side. Water that shows up in the firebox or on the damper usually comes from the top, through an open flue or a cracked crown. Damp brick inside the attic after a long soaking rain points to porous masonry. Our crew checks all three before recommending chimney flashing repair.
What metal do you use for chimney flashing?
On most asphalt shingle roofs we use aluminum or galvanized steel. On slate, cedar or historic homes we use copper, which lasts as long as the roof. We avoid pairing copper with galvanized steel or aluminum on the same detail because the two corrode each other.
My house has no chimney. Can you still help with a roof leak?
Yes. Much of our work is wall flashing, skylight flashing, vent pipe boots and valley flashing, which use the same methods as a chimney. On homes without masonry chimneys, those are where most leaks start.
Can a chimney leak be fixed in winter?
Flashing and caps can be installed in cold weather if the roof is dry and free of ice. Mortar work and crown repairs need temperatures above about 40 degrees for the mix to cure, so in cold months we may tarp and flash first, then finish the masonry in spring.
Why does my chimney leak only in heavy storms?
Light rain runs off. Heavy, wind-driven rain gets pushed sideways into loose counter flashing, through open mortar joints and into an uncapped flue. If your leak only shows up in big storms, the flashing and the brick face are the first things we check.
